Lulo, the living cartoon

Also online as Jo van Goth

I make stories. I live in the dystopia of America's Pacific Northwest. Everything I touch and do is visibly influenced by being queer, neurodevelopmentally disabled, & needing access for an untypical body (in a nice-looking package.) My ever-present purple-lensed glasses are medical as much as fashionable. They make for a great story—maybe you'll hear it sometime.

What making stories is

I say I make stories because since all of forever, it has never been just one medium, one format. It has always been that I make stories through unconventional methods, too. Crocheting is making a story. Spinning a true tale from my life is making a story. Making a meme is a story even as much as making my art, cartoons, poems, or novels.

My pen name, LC Rising, is the only one I've ever used online. I can't even remember when it first appeared! Ever since I knew what the internet could really do, I've been sharing my stories over the web in all kinds of ways.  Much of that is lost or archived, such as anything on previous website domains. Like, there were not one but two poetry collections lost to small print runs and a site shutting down. My writing is now largely found on To Be Perfectly Queer, my website, or occasionally my ko-fi.

Nothing you see from me will be generative AI. I'm firmly against what we now call AI & I'm tired of arguing about it.

What I am

Linguist

Language is my second language. I'm not a polyglot, but that is an aspiration. My focuses are sociolinguistics, including justice in language; comparative analysis; and language instruction.

I got my 4 year degree in linguistics and also linguistics. I spent the entire degree studying the social use of language, how we teach language, & the best ways to support young English learners in American classrooms. I was volunteering in a special needs high school during the 2016 presidential election and subsequent inauguration. I might forget my graduation day, but I will never forget the worry for those students, for our communities. It hasn't stopped.

日本語で時々読みます。まあまあ話せます。英語で話しますください;日本語で書くのOKです。

Cartoonist

Because why be ashamed of that word? The cartoon page in the newspaper was a thing growing up. I'm not better than Garfield and Get Fuzzy. I've mainly done single panel or single page comics like the funnies pages, too. The first cartoons I have record of were done in MS Paint, originally uploaded decades ago by now.

Cartoons can be found on Tapas, my bluesky, and eventually: here on my website!

Member & volunteer with Cartoonist's United.

Random things-ist

I do whatever and whenever and I can't help that, but I promise I get back to sharing the stories I make! Sometimes I even remember your favourite blue hellsite exists.
